1. Sunscreen should always be the last step of your morning routine.
Sunscreen is the most important thing in your morning skincare routine. There’s no point having any sort of skincare regime if you are not wearing sunscreen. The general order in which your routine should look like:
- Toner/Essence (Optional)
- Serum (Optional)
- Makeup (Optional)
2. You need to put on sunscreen even on cloudy or rainy days.
UVA rays are responsible for signs of premature aging. Remember, UVA = Aging. UVA rays have a longer wavelength that can not only penetrate through glass and clouds, it goes deep into the dermis of our skin to cause cellular damage. Therefore, rain or shine, sunscreen is a definite must.
3. Less is NOT more with sunscreen.
A little does not go a long way with sunscreen. Let us be clear, less sunscreen = less coverage. To get the protection it states on the label, you would need to apply 2 mg of sunscreen per square centimeter. Depending on the size of your face, that will come up to be about ½ a teaspoon for the face and neck.
4. Don’t over cleanse. Just don’t.
No matter what skin type you might have, you should at least be washing your face once a day. More specifically, in the evenings to take off all the sunscreen, makeup and dirt that has accumulated on your skin throughout the day. A common problem with people with oily, acne-prone skin is that they feel the need to wash their face as much as they can to remove the oil. But in doing so, can cause the skin to overcompensate and produce MORE oil. A quick sign that you are over cleansing: your skin feels oily but dry.
5. When dealing with breakouts, sometimes it’s best to stop everything and simplify your skincare routine.
When dealing with pesky breakouts or sensitised skin, sometimes it might be beneficial to go back to the basics and simplify your skincare routine. Sometimes we could be causing the skin more harm than good. A classic example is over-exfoliating or overusing retinol products. At SKNEDIT, we believe in caring and listening to your skin. Don’t use an active like BHA every single day because your friend or your favourite influencer does so. Instead, listen to your skin and only use it only when your skin needs it.
