4 Common Skincare Mistakes

Mistake 1: Using abrasive scrubs

Toss out any physical scrubs (e.g. walnut scrubs, sugar scrubs, micro-beads, etc.) because you don't need them! They cause micro-tears in the skin and can lead to a compromised skin barrier and an increase in skin sensitivity.

SKNEDIT tip: Opt for a chemical exfoliator with acids like AHAs, BHA, PHAs instead.

Try this: REN Clean Skincare's Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic, S$52. An exfoliating toner formulated with lactic acid, a gentler form of Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA) to gently exfoliate and encourage cell renewal for brighter, more radiant skin.

Mistake 2: Over-exfoliating

Always pace yourself when using a chemical exfoliator containing acids like AHA, BHA and PHA. Over-exfoliation of your skin can cause you to have a compromised skin barrier (e.g. skin redness and sensitivity) and more breakouts.

SKNEDIT tip: Only exfoliate your skin 2-3 times a week, or when you feel your skin needs it!

Mistake 3: Over-cleansing

Your skin should not feel tight after cleansing. Over-cleansing your skin can lead to more problems like a compromised skin barrier (e.g. skin redness and sensitivity) and more breakouts.

SKNEDIT tip: Try washing your face with water in the morning if you have dry skin, or switch to a non-foaming, hydrating cleanser.

Try this: Sioris' Cleanse Me Softly Milk Cleanser, S$30. A gentle, non-foaming, milk cleanser that gently washes away makeup, dirt, excess oil, and impurities without drying out the skin.

Mistake 4: Improper use of sunscreen

Sunscreen is arguably the most important step in your routine. However, most people are guilty of not using enough (approx. 1/2 teaspoon for face and neck) and not reapplying sunscreen.

SKNEDIT tip: Use 2 mg per cm² for your face and neck. Always remember to reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours.

Try this: Colorescience's Sunforgettable® Total Protection™ Brush-On Shield SPF 50, S$115. Tinted all-mineral skin shield provides complete protection in one convenient, on-the-go application— alone or over makeup. It protects you from UVA/UVB, pollution, blue light, and infrared (IR). It is also water/sweat resistant for up to 80 minutes.

Also try this: SAINT CHIC's Sun Visor, S$42. Because sun protection is more than just sunscreen. This sun visor has a UPF rating of 50+ and blocks over 99% of the sun's harmful Ultraviolet (UV) rays. A full-coverage adjustable tinted lens gives you protection for your face from the sun.

Bottom line is:

Having a happy and healthy skin barrier is the key to good skin health. Sometimes less is more when it comes to skincare.
